Supporting families with transgender relatives

How can I help you?

Hi, I’m Paula and I’m guessing we have something in common. I’m guessing that we both have a family member who is transgender?

Having a person in the family who is transgender can bring different challenges in many areas of your life, and then add to that the range of emotions you can feel such as confusion, shock, fear, sadness and love to name only a few.

You may be struggling to deal with how you feel and this new situation. You may be fully supportive of their transition but the level of support you provide to them may leave you feeling drained, worried and overwhelmed. It’s really tough for everyone.

But, that’s where I can help.

I support family members who have a transgender relative This can be in person from my therapy room near Bungay on the Norfolk/Suffolk border or online.

I support parents, partners, siblings, grandparents and extended family who are aged 18+.

You may be right at the start and only just found out or you may be further along the path but are facing some difficult challenges. It doesn’t matter where you are as I’m here to support you.

I support clients by:

  • Listening with empathy and compassion
  • Providing a safe space for you to talk honestly and openly about how you’re really feeling with no judgement from me
  • Providing education around matters of gender, which may give you some clarity on terminology and that can help you feel less confused and overwhelmed
  • Providing additional resources such as book recommendations, podcasts etc that may help you understand what’s going on.
  • Between us we can look at issues that need solutions and how you can best achieve them.

HOW COUNSELLING CAN BENEFIT YOU.

  • It can help you find a way to support your loved one even if you are struggling yourself.
  • Work through the feelings of grief you may be feeling.
  • Help you find acceptance of this new situation.
  • Find coping strategies in times of anxiety and overwhelm
  • Find hope in what may feel a scary frightening time.
